The successful candidate will team with research and development customers and facility and operations managers and staff assigned to RRD facilities in supporting research and in the continued implementation of the FPE Program.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;This includes:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;Customer/research Support: The successful candidate must possess sufficient customer service skills and technical ability to provide technical fire protection engineering support in a team environment. This includes review of work packages, field walkdowns and assessment activity, and providing FPE consultations.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;Implementation of Requirements: This position involves interpreting and assuring Laboratory (Lab-wide) and facility (building specific) compliance with DOE, UT-Battelle, LLC, state, federal, and National Fire Protection Association requirements (as applicable per the UT-Battelle contract with DOE and UT-Battelle internal policies and procedures.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;Facility Assessments: Performing and/or reviewing scheduled Fire Protection Engineering facility Assessments (FPEAs) and / or Fire Hazards Analysis (FHAs) as assigned and per DOE requirements.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;Includes evaluation of fire prevention/protection measures [sprinkler systems, fire detection and alarm systems, hazardous materials use, storage, and associated safeguards, construction type(s), Fire and Life Safety Code evaluations, etc.] within the various Laboratory and support facilities.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;Design/Modification Guidance: Participates in the development of project specific fire protection design criteria and associated specifications.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;Design Review: Conducting fire protection reviews of drawings and specifications for planned new construction and/or building/process modifications. Includes review of design change packages to ensure that fire protection interactions with supporting systems are appropriately considered.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;System Support: Supporting installation, modification, and commissioning efforts for fire and life safety related systems/features for new construction and building/process modifications. Successful candidate(s) will be provided the opportunity to complete the necessary facility-specific training to become a qualified Systems Engineer for select fire protection systems.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;Hazardous Materials: Interpreting requirements and implementing associated safeguards to control risk associated with the use, handling, and storage of hazardous materials (e.g., compressed flammable gas, pyrophoric materials, combustible and flammable liquids). Working knowledge of the building code and fire code approach to hazardous materials management is considered a plus for this position.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;Fire Barriers: Supporting ORNL&#8217;s fire barrier configuration management program in assigned facilities.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Qualifications Required&lt;br /&gt;The ideal candidate for this position would hold a B.S. degree in Fire Protection Engineering or Fire Protection Engineering Technology or possess a comparable engineering B.S. degree (combined with relevant experience/expertise).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;The ideal candidate for this position would possess between five years and fifteen years of fire protection engineering experience however all experience levels will be considered. Experience in nuclear facility related fire protection engineering is considered a plus.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;In addition to applying prescriptive code requirements, the ability to develop, propose, and implement defendable risk-based decisions related to fire safety issues is a skill that is important for these positions.  The successful candidate will need the ability to achieve an awareness and sensitivity to the impacts and implementation challenges that fire protection elements can create in existing facilities and to operations.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;The successful candidate must possess a working knowledge and understanding of physics of fire, hydraulics, chemistry, thermodynamics, computer, and analytical skills.  Candidate must have excellent verbal and communication skills, and ability to develop and foster positive customer relations.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;Ability to obtain membership in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and/or the National Fire Protection Association considered a plus.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;Ability to obtain a DOE security Q clearance is required.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. Candidate will interact in person and in writing with contractors, project managers, owner representatives, end users, and other stakeholders regarding project-related effects on safety, life safety, and facility operations; document safety-related project planning, monitoring, and follow-up activities in writing and/or with photographs, and maintain records for applicable surveys; develop and present training programs; review CADD drawings and phasing plans with project teams to assess Life Safety Code discrepancies and interim life safety measures needed; oversee the Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM) process; conduct building assessments and field verifications of existing conditions influencing Life Safety Code compliance; and make formal recommendations for ILSMs and other protective measures.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class='indent'&gt;Qualified candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry, Biology, Safety Management, Industrial Management, Industrial Engineering, Risk Management, Occupational Safety, Safety Engineering, or related discipline; basic knowledge of State and Federal OSHA, The Joint Commission, EPA, FDA, DOT, CDC, and NFPA laws/regulations/codes; be a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional, and/or BCSP accredited certification; a strong background in construction and fire safety; a minimum of eight years of experience in environmental health and safety or related discipline; and a minimum of six years of healthcare experience.
